This books aims to give a comprehensive history of data visualization with an emphasis on the questions: (a) How did the graphic depictions of numbers arise? Why? (b) What factors led to the key innovations in graphs and diagrams that are commonplace today? (c) How did graphic inventions make a difference in understanding natural and social phenomena and communicating results?

This book provides an accessible introduction to the major methods of categorical data analysis for data exploration, statistical testing and statistical models. As opposed to more theoretical books, the goal here is to help the reader to translate theory into practical application, by providing skills and software tools for carrying out these methods.

Graphical methods for quantitative data are well-developed and widely used, but comparable methods for categorical data (contingency tables, discrete response data) were neither. Visualizing Categorical Data was written to extend the full range of statistical graphics to such data. Many real applications are described and illustrated.

This book, Visual Statistics: Seeing Data with Dynamic Interactive Graphics, written with Forrest W. Young and Pedro Valero-Mora, describes a paradigm for doing statistical analysis in a purely visual way with dynamic interactive graphics. It illustrates these ideas using ViSta: The Visual Statistics System, freely-available on the internet.
