- AUTOMATIC FORECASTING SYSTEMS designs, develops and
markets time series forecasting and analysis software. The web site has
tons of educational material and links for this subject.
Automatic Forecasting Systems (AFS) was founded by David P. Reilly in
1975. AFS was launched to market a radical piece of software, for its
time, a forecasting package that did automatically what was thought to be
an art; Forecasting.
In the twenty plus years since its launch AFS continues to focus on that
core goal while adding statistical features that are hot out of the
statistical
journals. AFS's products, across platforms and interfaces, continue to be
based on a forecast engine that has been programmed and tuned to do
what only the best of forecasters can do; build Box-Jenkins ARIMA and
Transfer Function models.
AFS continually looks to the future of forecasting. This includes both
methodologies and in applications. As advances in the field are made AFS
has the depth of statistical knowledge and the practical programming
experience to integrate them into our packages. We are also constantly
working to expand our products breadth of application into exciting areas
such as production planning and inventory control and real time systems.

- Description:
- This introductory statistics website was written for
biotechnology students but is useful for any statistics student. The
website only covers descriptive statistics. The website is divided into
twelve lectures. The first highlights the difference between descriptive
and inferential statistics and defines common terms used in statistics.
It also touches upon different sampling methods. The second lecture
looks at organising and displaying data using bar charts, pie charts,
histograms, stem and leaf display and Pareto chart. It then describes
how to construct ungrouped and grouped frequency distributions with
corresponding charts such as the ogive. The third lecture discussed
measures of central tendency concentrating on the mean, median, mode and
midrange. The fourth lecture then turns to measures of dispersion and
concentrates on the standard deviation, the variance, the interquartile
range and the range. The fifth turns to measures of position and looks
at the five number summary, percentiles and boxplots. It also explains
how to understand the standard deviation, introduces the normal
distribution along with standard scores and presents Chebyshev's rule.
The sixth lecture looks at bivariate data at presents techniques for
quantitative - qualitative data, quant-quant data and qual-qual. These
include scatterplots, correlation and regression. The seventh and eighth
lectures look at probability up to conditional probability. There is
also discussion on bayes theory with emphasis on sensitivity /
specificity of tests and test screening. There is also an interesting
discussion on the different types of probability. The ninth lecture
introduces random variables and how to find the mean and variance of a
random distribution. There is also an explanation of the difference
between a relative frequency table and a random distribution. The final
three lectures then concentrate and specific distributions the first of
which is the binomial. There is also a look at combinations and
permutations in this section. The eleventh lecture looks at the normal
distribution and z-scores. The final lecture finishes on the Poisson
distribution. Note there is also a comprehensive statistics glossary
with the site.
